Leading Intellectual Property Journal Managing IP Names Jonathan K. Waldrop California IP Practitioner of the Year
Managing IP Americas has awarded Jonathan K. Waldrop, partner and head of the Intellectual Property group at Kasowitz Benson Torres, the 2021 California Practitioner of the Year in Litigation Award. The Kasowitz IP group, led by Mr. Waldrop, also won an Impact Case of the Year Award for the firm’s precedent-setting victory at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) for Fintiv, Inc. in its patent infringement litigation against tech giant Apple.
Mr. Waldrop represents industry-leading companies in patent litigation involving interactive web, video streaming, cable, medical device, and gaming system technologies. His clients include Fintiv, Google, LG, ASUS, WSOU, and other world-leading global technology companies. In the Fintiv against Apple matter, Mr. Waldrop and the Kasowitz team defeated Apple’s petition for inter partes review of the patent at issue, the first time the PTAB had issued a discretionary denial of such a petition based on the pendency of a parallel patent action. In the parallel action in the Western District of Texas, scheduled for trial on October 4, 2021, Fintiv alleges that Apple Wallet infringes Fintiv’s patent relating to the management of virtual cards stored on mobile devices. The Kasowitz team representing Fintiv also includes partners Darcy L. Jones and Marcus Barber, special counsel ThucMinh Nguyen, and associates John W. Downing, Heather S. Kim and Paul G. Williams.
Mr. Waldrop and Kasowitz were presented with the awards at Managing IP’s virtual Americas Awards event held on April 7, 2021. The Awards recognize remarkable achievements of law firms and legal professionals during the past year, focusing on cases that were of great significance to clients and/or IP law and practice.
